How to solve Secondary School Math questions

Exam questions come in all shapes and sizes.

Sometimes, they look like questions in your textbook or worksheets.

Many times, they look like nothing you’ve ever seen. Not what your teacher had written on the board. Nor any homework you copied from your classmate.

When that happens, how do you solve the question?

Most questions are solved using the same methods. They are just worded differently.

The first thing to do when you face such questions is to ask yourself — what are the formulas and theories you’ve learned in this topic?

Take for example a question on linear graphs. In this topic, you’ve learned:

Go through these 5 and see which one fits the question.

Putting this into practice here.

First, you write down everything you know about the graph.

Then, you look out for things you’ve learned about linear graphs. Here, you have something familiar — the equation of a linear graph (y = mx + c)!

c is the constant and also the y-intercept. If you shift things around in the equation, 3y + x = 15, you’ll realise that the y-intercept is 5. Which means A is 5.

Here, you can then use the formula for the length of a line segment to find the length of AB!

Second example, a question on circles.

In the world of circles, you learned…

Which ones can you apply to this question?
