How drawing helps you get better at Secondary Math

Maths is 75% logic, 25% art. Most times, you’ll need to understand the question, write a series of logical equations, and you’ll arrive at the answer.

Other times, understanding the question is not enough. You’ll also need to showcase your artistic talent by drawing.

Take this graph question as an example.

You could start imagining how the graphs would look and get your brain all tangled up.

Tangled

Or you could draw the axes, plot the points, and join them like you would in kindergarten art class.

Tadah!

Example number two — congruence and similarity.

This question says that triangles ABF and GCF are similar.

And their sides have numbers. It can be confusing if you try to work things out just by looking at this diagram.

The better way to solve it is to draw the two triangles in the same orientation. Match the letters in the same order as how they name the triangles.

Then you can proceed with ease.

Not all questions can be solved with art. But where you can, draw it. Do the markings—dirty the paper (with your pencil).

That will help you visualise better. And often, you’ll find the answer.
